This unit will deliver a practical knowledge of the anatomy and function of the eye, address common eye conditions prevalent in the UK, their cause and prognosis. The functional use of low vision and the practical application of the role of magnification within the rehabilitative process will be formalised alongside the application of training.

In this unit the learner will explore the history and culture of services available to people with a visual impairment, identify and develop the practical skills necessary to conduct a needs led assessment and create structured, realistic programmes of rehabilitation tailored to the needs of the individual. They will explore the provision of services and legislation within a legal context and identify areas of need that require additional professional or social attention.

This unit aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the importance and the breadth of learning experiences available to the adult with a visual impairment. It will address how learning fits within the rehabilitative process of an individual with a visual impairment and enable the learner to develop their own style of teaching, the development of creative progressive strategies and empower independence through the delivery of high quality learning experiences.

This unit addresses the issues faced by people with a visual impairment when encountering everyday tasks inside and outside of the home. It offers formal strategies and the development of a problem solving approach for the implementation of unique strategies to facilitate independence and improve and maintain safety within the home.

This unit explores the importance of communication for the person with a visual impairment. It examines the skills required to enable them to access a variety of reading, writing and speech solutions to help attain or maintain effective communication.

This unit aims to provide knowledge of the impact a lack of independent mobility has on a person with a visual impairment alongside the skills required to enable them to attain or maintain independent orientation and mobility in an indoor environment.
